  Speaker Workshop
Version 0.94 Crossover Optimization

Click here to read about Chart Notes

Version 0.94 adds the ability to have Speaker Workshop select the correct crossover components for your specific driver. It does this by allowing you to build a target (goal) response and then have the crossover components tweaked until the crossover produces that target (or close).

This feature only works with a network with a single driver. An example follows:

I wanted to build a crossover for my LPG38T tweeter to work with the Vifa PL18 driver for the speaker project (you can see the writeup there). The original crossover wasn't very good. Anyway, using network optimization, we do the following steps.

(1) Create a goal dataset (Network / Create Goal) set to Butterworth 3rd order at 2KHz using the Tweeter frequency response from 2K to 5K.

(2) Create a first pass at the crossover, using a resonant peak compensator and a stock crossover.

To produce this crossover

with this response

This isn't a bad fit, but it's not great and it uses a bunch of components (including a 4mH choke). That's about as good as you can do without an optimizer or a lot of hand tuning.

Now, I try something a little different. Run the optimizer

When we're done, the crossover looks like this:

Note that the impedance compensation has disappeared - the optimizer does better without it. Instead, I'll try removing the big choke and the resistor and try using compensation to improve the high end then run it again. Now I get this circuit (using 200 points).

and this response

Note we now have fewer components and a much better fit. You can keep fussing with the component set trying lots of different things until the crossover is incredibly well-tuned.
